Thermodynamic phase stability in gasification carbon feedstock slags influenced by vanadium oxide

Abstract


Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle used in power and chemical production is considered a clean technology, with the ability to capture almost all CO2, NOx, and SOx emissions. In entrained bed slagging gasifiers, molten slags formed from feedstock non-volatile impurities contribute to gasifier liner degradation and gasifier clogging, affecting system efficiency, operation, and service life. A recent trend with the increased petcoke use as a feedstock has drastically modified slag chemistry, leading to realms where slag properties and behavior are not identified. In this work, phase equilibria in synthetic slags (Al2O3-CaO-FeO-SiO2-V2O3) were evaluated in simulated gasifier conditions to establish an understanding of the phase equilibrium in these slag systems. The effects of temperature, V2O3 content, slag chemistry, and additives on amorphous and crystalline phases were investigated. In this study, increasing additives of CaO and FeO were found to lower the slag melting temperature and caused the karelianite (V crystal) size to increase. Phase diagrams of the vanadium-bearing slag systems were proposed to guide the gasification industry.

Bio:
Jinichiro Nakano is a multi-field materials scientist with expertise in computational thermodynamics and in-situ high temperature experimental investigations in metallic and ceramic systems with an emphasis on structural alloys, refractories, energy and environmental applications. After he received Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at McMaster University (Canada) in 2006, his research continued on structural alloys at University of Louvain (Belgium). He was research faculty at Carnegie Mellon University (USA) from 2007 to 2010 before he started to work for U.S. DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory (current). Nakano’s work has been recognized by: NSERC Research Award (2000); ASM (2001, 2003); CIM (2004); Compost Council of Canada Best Paper (2006); Gustav-Eirich Award in Germany (2011); American Ceramic Society Richard and Patricia Sprigss Phase Equilibria Award at MSandT’12 (2012); and URS Pyramid Award in innovation (2012). His publications were acknowledged by Elsevier’s ScienceDirect TOP25 Hottest Articles in CALPHAD (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011); Most Cited CALPHAD Articles (2005, 2007, 2010); and Most Downloaded Articles in International Journal of Hydrogen Energy (2014). He has given a number of invited lectures including TU Bergakademie Freiberg (Germany), National Institute for Materials Science (Japan), University of Tokyo (Japan), University of Brussels (Belgium), European Center for Refractories (Germany), and Georgia Institute of Technology (USA).
