Nuclear Fuels and Materials Development and Testing at Idaho National Laboratory

Abstract


Nuclear fuel design, development, irradiation, and examination are core capabilities at Idaho National Laboratory. With unique facilities including the Advanced Test Reactor, Hot Fuel Examination Facility, and Irradiated Materials Characterization Laboratory, INL is involved in all phases of the fuel development and testing life cycle. Research at INL supports fuel development and testing for multiple programs including reduced enrichment fuel for research reactors, accident tolerant fuel for commercial reactors, and new fuels for advanced reactors.
Dr. Chichester has been involved with irradiation testing of advanced fuels since 2004. She will present an overview of fuels research at INL and highlight efforts in the fields of transmutation fuels for fast reactors and accident tolerant fuels for light water reactors.

Bio:
Heather Chichester is a senior staff scientist at Idaho National Laboratory in the Nuclear Fuels and Materials Division. Dr. Chichester is the Technical Lead for Irradiation Testing and Postirradiation Examination for DOE’s Advanced Fuels Campaign.
Prior to joining INL Heather was a Senior Member of Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories, 2004-2006. She completed her B.S. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1996 and earned her Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2004.
Heather is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Wisconsin in the Engineering Physics department. She has been a member of the American Nuclear Society since 1994, and currently serves on the Board of Directors.
