Materials Development for Future Energy Conversion Systems

Abstract


New technologies such as oxy-fuel turbines, hydrogen turbines, solid oxide fuel cells, and ultra-supercritical steam plants are being developed to reduce the impact of using fossil energy on the environment. One common barrier in the development of new technologies for the future energy conversion systems is insufficiency of existing materials at high temperatures (>1150 °C) and aggressive atmospheres (e.g., steam, oxygen, carbon dioxide). To overcome this barrier, integrated design methodology is applied to the development of refractory metal based alloys. The integrated design utilizes the multi-scale computational methods to design materials for requirements of processing and performance, and experimental verification.
