Academe and industry collects Materials Science data to give insight into the physical mechanisms that exist in material systems being studied or manufactured. Before the data can be interpreted, the variability of the collection methods must be understood. Once this is done, the variability of the data collected can be analyzed to create a full picture. Statistical analysis methods used in industry will be described followed by a discussion of their application in academe. The goal of the discussion is to show that conclusions are only as precise and accurate as the data collection and analysis.
