The local approach to electronic structure in materials

Date: Thursday, May 30th
Presenter: Dr. Roger Haydock, University of Oregon

We know that electronic properties of an atom such as its binding energy, magnetic moment, and so forth are determined by nearby atoms rather than those far away, even though individual electronic states are spread over the whole material. In the local approach we relate atomic properties to successively more distant environments. The importance of the local environment is illustrated with examples ranging from cohesion to ductility, catalysis, and magnetic ordering.
